Sidewalk Trip Hazard Repair in Utah

Most sidewalk trip hazards happen because one square has sunk below the one next to it. We fix that by lifting the low square back up with polyurethane foam so the edges sit flush again, with no tear-out and no new concrete. You can walk on the sidewalk as soon as we finish.

Utah Concrete Lifting and Repair is a family-owned company based in Mapleton. Owner Drew Hubbard is a licensed and insured General Contractor (Utah license 12877564-5501, B100) with 20+ years of construction experience. We've helped 2,000+ homeowners and earned 200+ five-star Google reviews.

Why sidewalks sink in Utah

Freeze-thaw cycles

Water under the slab freezes, expands and thaws, opening gaps that the square settles into. A one-inch drop is easy to miss and easy to trip over, especially at night or when it's icy.

Clay and bench soils

Clay in Lehi, American Fork and Saratoga Springs swells and shrinks with moisture. Silty bench soils in Provo and Spanish Fork can wash out or collapse when soaked.

Sprinklers and downspouts

Water soaking the soil next to the walk carries dirt out from underneath.

What we don't do

We don't saw-cut, grind down, or replace sidewalk panels. Lifting raises the low side. If a panel was pushed up by a tree root rather than sinking, lifting may not be the right fix, and we'll tell you so.

City or HOA sidewalk?

Responsibility for sidewalks along the street varies by city, and HOAs set their own rules. Check with your city or HOA first; we'll give you an estimate to share. Commercial walkways: see HOA and commercial lifting.

How polyurethane concrete lifting works

  1. We drill small holes, about 3/8 inch across (roughly the size of a dime), in the sunken slab.

  2. We inject high-density polyurethane foam underneath.

  3. The foam expands, fills the empty spaces under the slab, and lifts the concrete back into position.

  4. We patch the holes.

  5. You can walk on the sidewalk right away, often before we've packed up.

We use a custom-made 3 lb hydrophobic polyurethane foam, made locally by Utah Foam Products: made in our area, for our area. No demolition, no hauling, and no waiting for new concrete to cure. Compare methods in Polyjacking vs. Mudjacking in Utah.

What sidewalk trip hazard repair costs

Our pricing is the same everywhere we work:

  • Typical sidewalk: $300 to $1,200, depending on length and other factors

  • Driveway panel: $300 to $800, depending on size and how much lift is needed

  • Steps, patios, and other jobs: free estimate

  • Minimum job charge: None

If the square is in one piece and has simply settled, lifting keeps the concrete you have. If it's crumbling or broken into many pieces, replacement is usually better. Your exact price comes from a free on-site estimate. For what raises or lowers the price, see our Utah concrete lifting cost guide.

Our 3-year warranty

Every lifting job comes with a 3-year warranty. If a slab we lifted settles more than 1/4 inch within three years, we come back and lift it again (a fuel fee may apply). Lifting doesn't change the soil, so we'll also point out drainage problems worth fixing. Read the full warranty.

Sidewalk trip hazards in winter

A trip hazard is often worse once it's icy. We lift only when it's above 40°F and the slab is clear of snow and ice. If a problem shows up mid-winter, we'll schedule the next day that meets both conditions.

Sidewalk trip hazard FAQ

How much does it cost to fix a sidewalk trip hazard?

Our cost guide lists a typical sidewalk at $300 to $1,200, depending on length and other factors, such as how far it has sunk. We give you an exact price on site.

Do you grind down the raised edge?

No. We lift the sunken square up to meet its neighbor with polyurethane foam. We don't saw-cut, grind, or replace sidewalk panels.

Is the sidewalk in front of my house my responsibility?

It depends on your city and, if you have one, your HOA. Check with your city's public works or engineering department, or your HOA, before scheduling.

Can you fix just one sunken square?

Yes. There's no minimum job charge, and estimates are free.
